Jeff Ellis
Jeff Ellis, a highly accomplished trial and appellate lawyer, has represented individuals charged with crimes for 17 years. Mr. Ellis is admitted to practice law in both Washington State and Texas, as well as numerous federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington.
During his career, Mr. Ellis has represented over 500 individuals in the trial courts and well over 100 in the appellate courts. From simple shoplifting to aggravated murder, Mr. Ellis vigorously defends his clients. "He treats each case like it's the most serious in the world," says one colleague, "because it is."
Mr. Ellis, a 1987 graduate of the University of Oregon Law School, worked for 15 years at The Defender Association representing people charged with misdemeanor and felony cases, as well as individuals facing commitment under the "sexual predator" law. He also supervised that office's felony and appellate divisions. In 2001-02, Mr. Ellis worked for the prestigious law firm of Schonemann, Rountree, & Owen, in Austin, Texas, representing death sentenced individuals in post-conviction proceedings. Mr. Ellis has also taught at both Seattle University and the University of Texas law schools. He is frequently invited to speak to other lawyers at seminars on a variety of criminal law topics.
Mr. Ellis has won major victories for his clients in both the trial and appellate courts. His appellate victories include the only case in Washington upholding a non-statutory mitigating sentencing factor and a case resulting in the dismissal of the death penalty notice.
Mr. Ellis is a member of the Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (WACDL), and is currently on their Board of Governors. Previously, Mr. Ellis was elected to their executive board and appointed as a co-chair of numerous committees. On three occasions, WACDL has recognized Mr. Ellis for his work. Mr. Ellis is also a long-standing member of the Washington Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty. In 2004, he was honored to be awarded "Abolitionist of the Year."
Washington Law and Politics magazine has listed Mr. Ellis as a "Super Lawyer" four times. Similarly, Martindale--Hubbell has given Mr. Ellis their highest possible rating. Mr. Ellis is one of only a handful of lawyers in Washington State to be certified to represent people facing or sentenced to the death penalty at the trial, appeal, and post-conviction stages.
A lifetime native of Washington, Mr. Ellis lives in Seattle with his wife and two children.
